The first role-playing dice proved that players wanted polyhedra. The next companies argued over what good dice should be.

Lou Zocchi made precision the center of that argument. GameScience began producing dice in 1974 and became the first major American manufacturer of polyhedral gaming dice. Zocchi objected to the common practice of tumbling dice to remove sprue marks and polish ink from the faces. Crystal Caste pushed at the silhouette and material. Founder Michael Bowling began the company in 1997 and brought a crystal-shaped d10 to Gen Con in 1998, selling through his stock and receiving a US patent soon afterward. The company expanded into stone, metal, unusual acrylic designs, mats, cases, bags, and jewelry.

Q WORKSHOP turned the surface of the die into illustrated territory. Its themed sets wrapped readable numbers in runes, leaves, symbols, characters, and licensed imagery. The Dice Lab returned to geometry itself, using mathematics and computation to produce fair alternative forms and practical high-sided dice. More recently, Pixels embedded lights, sensors, and Bluetooth inside physical dice, allowing a real roll to report itself to software.

The industry’s history is not a straight march from bad to good. It is a branching argument about what “good” means.
